May 13..

May 13..
When this date is mentioned, all Malaysians will definitely thought of the 'May 13 Incident'. The racial riots that took place on May 13 1969 in Kuala Lumpur had become the darkest history of our country, Malaysia. Officially, 196 people were killed as a results of the riots.

According to a Time magazine report on May 23, 1969, ”Malaysia’s proud experiment in constructing a multiracial society exploded in the streets of Kuala Lumpur last week. Malay mobs, wearing white headbands signifying an alliance with death, and brandishing swords and daggers, surged into Chinese areas in the capital, burning, looting and killing. In retaliation, Chinese, sometimes aided by Indians, armed themselves with pistols and shotguns and struck at Malay kampongs. Huge pillars of smoke rose skyward as houses, shops and autos burned.”

Now, about 4 decades(39 years) later, that incident still haunts Malaysians. Violence and killing. There are people who suffers loss and are affected by that incident. They don't even want to discuss the tragedy.

Even in times of trouble and unhappiness, there’s passion and love. There are people who helped to hide the other races. They risked being labeled “traitors to their own race".

As a Malaysian, I hope that the history wouldn't repeat itself.
And I hope for World Peace.
